Meeting! Building health systems that transform gender norms

KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and RinGs are hosting a workshop on Building Health Systems That Transform Gender Norms, in Nairobi, Kenya on 28 February – 1 March. This meeting includes health systems researchers, policymakers and practitioners.

Why are we hosting this meeting?

Health systems are shaped by, and contribute to, gender norms. How these norms influence the function of the health system, the treatment of people working within them, and the ways that service users are dealt with, differ according to context. There has been little attention paid to the gendered-nature of health systems. Health systems can reinforce harmful norms in society, strengthening patriarchy and acting contrary to gender equity. Harnessing the power of health systems could pay powerful dividends in terms of social change.

Meeting details:

This participatory workshop will bring together academics who use a gender and intersectional approach with policy makers (from national and county governments), and practitioners (health care workers, NGO staff) to explore the promise of these approaches. From it we will develop tools for researchers, policy makers and practitioners seeking to apply an intersectional gender approach to their health systems work.

This convening is funded by Advancing Learning and Innovation on Gender Norms (ALIGN), an initiative led by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). For further information, visit www.alignplatform.org and follow @ALIGN_Project.
